In a recent development, the Niger State House of Assembly has urged Governor Umaru Bago to officially ban the celebration of Markers’ Day and sign-out activities across all public and private secondary and tertiary institutions in the state.
The motion, raised during a plenary session, comes amid growing concerns over the increasing level of misconduct, unruly behaviour, and safety risks often associated with such events. Lawmakers argued that these celebrations, originally intended as moments of reflection and farewell, have gradually lost their meaning and now promote acts that are morally and socially questionable.
They noted that students often engage in vandalism, indecent dressing, excessive noise pollution, and sometimes violent acts under the guise of sign-out or marker day festivities.
The Assembly is now calling on the state government, through the Ministry of Education and other relevant bodies, to enforce a total ban on these events in order to restore discipline, focus on academics, and ensure the safety of students and staff.
If Governor Umaru Bago signs off on this proposal, schools across Niger State will have to adjust end-of-session practices, prioritising safer and more meaningful alternatives to celebrate academic milestones.
